Frequently asked questions

Is the magic square generator free?+

Yes. Generate unlimited magic square puzzles and play, print or download them for free — no account or signup needed.

What is a magic square?+

A magic square is a grid filled with the numbers 1 to n² so that every row, every column and both main diagonals add up to the same total, called the magic constant. For a 3×3 it's 15, for 4×4 it's 34, and for 5×5 it's 65.

Does every puzzle have one solution?+

Yes. We blank cells only as long as the puzzle still has exactly one valid completion, so every magic square you generate has a single unique solution.

What sizes and difficulties are available?+

Three sizes — 3×3, 4×4 and 5×5 — each with Easy, Medium and Hard settings that leave more or fewer starting numbers.

How do I print the magic square?+

Click Preview & Download, choose US Letter or A4, and download the PDF. It includes the puzzle with the target sum plus a separate answer key page.
