Frequently asked questions
What is a fact family?+
A fact family is a group of related math facts built from three numbers. For 3, 4 and 7 the addition/subtraction family is 3 + 4 = 7, 4 + 3 = 7, 7 − 3 = 4, and 7 − 4 = 3. Multiplication/division families work the same way with × and ÷.
Why do fact families help?+
They make the inverse relationship between operations explicit — addition undoes subtraction, and multiplication undoes division. Seeing all four facts from one triangle helps children learn facts in groups and use one known fact to find three others.
How is a fact family different from a number bond?+
A number bond is the part-part-whole diagram; a fact family is the four equations that come from it. Number bonds usually come first, then fact families turn the same numbers into written facts.
What ages are fact families for?+
Addition and subtraction fact families suit Grades 1–2 (ages 6–8); multiplication and division families fit Grades 3–4 as times tables are learned.
