Frequently asked questions

What is Battleship Solitaire (Sea Battle / Bimaru)?+

Battleship Solitaire is a popular pencil-and-paper logic puzzle invented in Argentina in 1982 by Jaime Poniachik. The objective is to discover the hidden positions of a naval fleet in a grid using numbers along the row and column edges that indicate how many ship segments occupy each line.

What is the non-touching rule in Battleship Solitaire?+

The core rule of Battleship Solitaire is that ships may NEVER touch each other in any direction — not even diagonally! Every ship must be completely surrounded by sea water or the outer edge of the grid.

What ships are in a standard fleet?+

In a standard 10×10 grid, the fleet consists of 1 Battleship (4 segments), 2 Cruisers (3 segments each), 3 Destroyers (2 segments each), and 4 Submarines (1 segment each) for a total of 10 ships and 20 ship segments. In 8×8 grids, there are 7 ships; in 6×6 grids, there are 6 ships.

What do the different segment shapes mean?+

Submarines are single round circles (⦿). Multi-segment ships have rounded caps at their ends pointing outward (▲, ▼, ◀, ▶) and square bodies in the middle (■). Water is represented by a wave (~) or light blue tint.

How do I solve a Battleship puzzle step-by-step?+

Start by filling all rows and columns with a clue of '0' with water. Next, surround any given submarine or ship end-cap diagonals with water, since ships can never touch diagonally. If an end cap points toward an adjacent cell, that cell must be part of the ship. Track the remaining ships in the fleet inventory as you discover them!

Can I print Battleship Solitaire worksheets for classroom or travel?+

Yes! Click 'Print / Save PDF' in the primary top toolbar. It exports a high-contrast 2-page vector PDF: Page 1 includes the puzzle grid, fleet inventory checklist, and student header, and Page 2 provides the complete solution key.
